Most Popular Dinghy Sailing Kit

If you are new to dinghy sailing, or kitting out a child who has just started, it is hard to know where to begin. This page is what other sailors are choosing right now, sorted by what sells most, so the first row is a good guide to what matters.

Our view: the small things come first. Warm feet and warm hands keep you sailing when the weather turns, which is why socks, gloves and a headband are usually at the top. Then a top layer, then boots, then the suit underneath.

Most Popular Dinghy Sailing Clothing FAQs

What should I buy first for dinghy sailing?

Start with a buoyancy aid, boots and gloves, because you need all three before your first sail and none of them are optional. After that, a wetsuit or long john and a spray top will cover most of the year. Everything else on this page is a nice addition, not a starting point. See our buoyancy aids to begin.

Why do socks and headbands sell so well?

Because cold feet and a cold head are what end a sailing day, and both are cheap to fix. A pair of neoprene socks under your boots and an Aquafleece headband are the two items we would never leave the dinghy park without from October onwards. They cost less than a bottle of sail wash and make a bigger difference than most of the expensive kit.

Is an Aquafleece top a spray top or a fleece?

Both, and that is why it is popular. The Aquafleece is a windproof, waterproof outer with a fleece lining, so it does the job of a spray top and a mid layer in one. Wear it over a rash vest in spring and autumn, and over a thermal top in winter. The Classic is the warmer cut, the Pro Lite is lighter for racing. More in spray tops.

Which of these are right for a junior sailor?

The Rooster Junior Diamond buoyancy aid, junior boots and the small sizes of the headband and socks are where to look. Most items on this page come in adult sizes only, so filter by size before you fall for something. We keep the kit that fits properly together in kids dinghy sailing clothing.

Does this page show what is in stock?

Yes, with sold out items marked. Popular sizes do go quickly in autumn, so if you see your size in stock we would order it rather than wait. Order by 2pm Monday to Friday and we dispatch the same day, and you have 90 days to return anything that does not fit.
