Halfway up the beat, legs locked under the toestraps, and a soft boot starts to let you down: the strap bites across the top of your foot and the sole folds around it. The Gill Edge 2.0 is built for that moment, giving you a firm platform to hike off and a fit you can pull tight enough that your foot stops moving inside the boot.

This is the stiffest sole Gill makes, so the load from the hiking strap spreads across your whole foot rather than digging into one spot. Laces let you tension the boot from toe to ankle, and a wide strap over the ankle holds everything in place once you have. Across the bridge, a moulded textured panel grips the strap so your feet stay put through gusts and roll tacks.

It suits anyone whose main job is hiking: singlehanders in ILCAs, Aeros and Solos, helms in doublehanders, and crews who hike rather than trapeze. The 4mm double lined neoprene keeps feet warm from spring into autumn, and for the winter series you can add a pair of neoprene socks underneath. Laces take a few seconds longer than a zip on the slipway, and the stiff sole trades a little feel for support, which is the right trade if hiking is what you do most in the boat.
