Rooster Dinghy Sailing Clothing FAQs
What is Rooster best known for?
Warm kit for cold water sailing. Rooster made its name with the Aquafleece, a windproof and waterproof top with a fleece lining that replaces a spray top and a mid layer in one. The neoprene socks, gloves and thermal base layers follow the same idea: keep the sailor warm so they can keep sailing. If you are buying Rooster, buy it for the winter months first.
Which Rooster Aquafleece should I get?
The one with adjustable cuffs and waist, if your budget allows. Both Aquafleece tops use the same fabric and give the same warmth. The difference is that the higher spec version lets you seal the cuffs and waist with neoprene adjusters, so you can shut cold water out when you capsize or go upwind in spray. The entry level version has fixed elastic and sells on price. See our Rooster Aquafleece guide for the full comparison.
Do Rooster sizes run true?
Broadly yes, with one caution. Rooster adult tops and thermals size close to UK high street sizing, so your usual size is a sensible start. Boots are sized in EU with a UK equivalent on the chart, so check the chart before ordering rather than guessing. Junior sizes are generous, so a child at the top of one size band is usually fine staying in it for a season.
What Rooster socks do I need for winter?
The thickest neoprene ones. Rooster makes socks in three thicknesses: a thin liner for inside a boot in summer, a mid weight all rounder, and a thick winter sock for frostbite sailing. Buy the thick ones for December to February and the mid weight for the rest of the year. Check that your boots have room for them, because a thick sock in a snug boot will give you cold feet from pinched circulation. See our sailing socks.
Does Rooster make junior sailing kit?
Yes, and it is one of the reasons we stock the brand. Rooster makes junior versions of the Aquafleece, the gloves, the socks and a junior buoyancy aid, cut for a child's shape rather than scaled down from adult sizes. For a young sailor starting at a club, a junior Aquafleece and junior neoprene socks are the two things that keep them on the water in the cold. See our kids dinghy sailing clothing.
