Zhik Superwarm FAQs
Superwarm or Microfleece, which Zhik wetsuit do I need?
Superwarm if you sail from November to March, Microfleece if you stop when the clocks go back. Superwarm is the warmer range, lined to hold heat when the suit is wet, and it is the one we reach for in a frostbite series. Microfleece is lighter and more flexible, and better for the rest of the year. If you only buy one and race through the winter, buy Superwarm and wear it with a rash vest in summer.
Do I need the Superwarm top as well as the skiff suit?
In the coldest months, yes. The skiff suit is sleeveless, so your arms rely on whatever you layer on top. The matching top goes over the suit and gives you warm sleeves and a second layer across the chest, which turns it into a full winter two piece. The two together are warmer than most drysuit and thermal combinations and far easier to move in. Buy the suit first, add the top for December.
Are Superwarm hikers worth it over the skiff suit?
Only if you sail a hiking singlehander. Hikers add padding along the thighs so you can hike harder for longer on an ILCA or Aero, and the Superwarm version keeps your legs warm while you do it. In a doublehander or trapeze boat the padding is wasted and the skiff suit is the better buy. Both are cut from the same fabric, so warmth is the same. See our hiking kit.
Which Superwarm gloves and socks should I buy?
Both, before the suit if the budget is tight. Cold hands and feet end more winter sails than a cold body, and the gloves and socks are the cheapest way into the range. The socks fit inside a boot, so check yours have room for a thicker sock or go up half a size. The gloves are full finger and warm enough for frostbite racing, with enough grip to hold a sheet all beat. See our sailing socks.
How should Zhik Superwarm fit?
Close, with no gap at the lower back when you stand straight. Zhik cuts for racing, so the fit is slimmer through the chest and shoulders than Gill or Rooster. If you are between sizes or want a thermal top under the suit, go up one. The womens cut has a shorter body and more room through the hips, and is worth waiting for if your size is out of stock. Check the size chart on each product page before ordering.
