Gill Zenlite FAQs
Zenlite or Zentherm, which Gill wetsuit do I need?
Zenlite from spring to autumn, Zentherm for winter. Zenlite is Gill's lighter range, built for stretch and freedom of movement with enough warmth for UK sailing from March to October. Zentherm is the thicker, thermal lined range for the months when the water is cold enough to matter. If you only buy one and sail year round, buy Zentherm and wear it with a rash vest in summer. If you stop sailing when the clocks go back, Zenlite is the better suit.
Do I need the Zenlite top as well as the long john?
Not to start with, but it is worth adding. The long john is sleeveless, so on its own it leaves your arms covered only by whatever you wear underneath. The matching neoprene top goes over the long john and gives you sleeves and a second layer across the chest, which turns a summer suit into one that works into autumn. Buy the long john first, then the top when you find yourself cold on the arms. Many sailors wear the top on its own over shorts in high summer.
How warm is a Zenlite long john?
Warm enough for a dunking in May, not warm enough for one in January. The neoprene is on the lighter side, which is what makes it so comfortable to hike in. With a long sleeve thermal underneath and a spray top over, it stretches to cover October and March club racing. Below that, step up to Zentherm. See our spray tops for the outer layer.
How should a Zenlite long john fit?
Close, with no gaps at the lower back or under the arms, but you should be able to crouch and reach forward without it pulling. Gill sizing sits close to UK high street sizing, so your usual size is a fair starting point, but measure your chest and check the chart on the product page. If you are between sizes, go down for a long john, since neoprene loosens slightly when wet. We offer 90 day returns if it does not feel right in the boat.
Is there a womens or junior Zenlite?
Yes. Gill makes Zenlite in a womens long jane cut and a junior long john, and we are adding both to the site as our Gill range grows. The womens cut has a shorter body and more room through the hips and chest, so it seals properly rather than gaping at the waist. The junior version is shaped for a child rather than scaled down from the mens suit. If the size you need is not listed yet, email us and we will tell you when it is due. In the meantime see our long jane wetsuits and kids dinghy sailing clothing.
